WISPIRG Stands Up For Real Cable Competition

Over the summer, AT&T pushed for a so-called “cable competition” bill that would allow them to cherry- pick the most lucrative communities while refusing to provide cable in others. Under the new bill, most consumers would not experience competition and many, particularly in rural communities, would still not have access to enhanced video and broadband technology.

In July, WISPIRG joined with the Teletruth Wisconsin coalition in opposing the bill before the Legislature. “The Legislature should make laws that give consumers favored status, not AT&T,” said Bruce Speight, WISPIRG advocate.

“This bill misses the opportunity to develop the video service marketplace in a way that truly benefits and protects Wisconsin consumers.”

WISPIRG has been working with the Teletruth Wisconsin coalition and legislators to draft legislation that would benefit consumers and truly provide enhanced technology and cable competition in Wisconsin. In addition, WISPIRG authored an op-ed with Consumers’ Union that appeared in the Green Bay Press Gazette, and the Capital Times editorialized urging the Legislature to listen to the recommendations of WISPIRG and the members of the Teletruth Wisconsin coalition.
